SAFETY ENGINEER - SAFETY SCIENTIST - SR. SAFETY SCIENTIST - SAFETY & INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE

Who We Are:

The Safety & Industrial Hygiene group is responsible for ensuring the safety and health of personnel. This is done through hazard assessment and mitigation, continual improvement efforts, and ensuring compliance.

Objectives of this Role:

• Act as the Flight Safety Engineer or lead safety person on projects within the Space Sciences and Engineering Division.
• Implement NASA safety policies and project specific safety requirements and monitor the project safety program for compliance while coordinating with project specific Safety Working Groups.
• Perform Project safety reviews, review safety documents and safety compliance verification activities while interfacing in project safety matters with the instrument and subsystem providers and spacecraft team at SwRI.
• Support or lead mishap reporting and investigations.
• Act as main contact for NASA Interim Response Team.

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:

• Conduct hazard analysis and document safety plans, decisions, processes, and results.
• Develop and maintain Systems Safety Program Plan and assure that software safety is addressed.
• Participate in formal safety reviews, project milestone reviews, and the certification of safety-critical software prior to operational release.
• Generate and maintain NASA/DOD driven Safety Requirements Compliance Checklists and Hazard Reports.
• Work with engineering teams on mitigations.
• Support customer Payload Safety Working Group meetings and project specific safety events, such as inspections, test witnessing & monitoring, and safety training.

Requirements:

• Requires a Bachelors with a 3.00 GPA in Safety, Engineering, or directly related degree field with related work experience
• 2 years: Previous experience in the role of Flight Safety Engineer and have knowledge of NASA Procedural Requirements (NPR) and other governing standards and MIL specs.
• Experience in occupational safety or safety inspection
• Strong communication skills
• Current or past experience with NASA Safety requirements such as Air Force Space Command Manual 91-710, Volume 3 is preferred
• A valid/clear driver's license is required
