CRAFT ASSISTANT - CRAFT TECHNICIAN - Electrician – Maintenance & Inventory

Who We Are:

The Facility Operations Electrical group manages planned and emergency maintenance for SwRI's utility infrastructure, including a 40MW medium voltage main station, 14 substations, and related systems. We provide routine/emergency maintenance for building electrical systems (600V and below), plus design/build services, project management, engineering support, and power quality monitoring. We support Southwest Research Institute, a nonprofit R&D organization serving government and industry clients.

Objectives of this Role:

• Maintain a clean, organized, and operational electrical shop to ensure tool and material readiness for all SwRI infrastructure support activities.
• Provide responsive, safe, and efficient trade work, including emergency call-ins, minimizing downtime across 14 substations and all building systems.
• Support campus-wide electrical reliability by proactively managing parts inventory, salvaging usable components, and ensuring proper waste and material handling.
• Ensure continuous service quality and compliance through diligent use of the Planon ticketing system for tracking preventive maintenance and repairs.
• Promote a safe working environment by adhering to and reinforcing safety protocols, coordinating inspections, and upholding SWRI’s environmental standards.

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:

• Maintain a clean, organized electrical shop with stocked tools and materials to support daily operations and emergency response readiness.
• Receive, inspect, and process deliveries; manage part requisitions and returns to support projects and field operations.
• Perform routine safety and environmental inspections, including generators and transformer checks; report issues for corrective action.
• Ability to complete and follow lockout/tagout procedures and operate tools, lifts, and vehicles safely; complete electrical tasks with minimal risk to people or property.
• Log daily work, manage work orders, and track preventive maintenance schedules using the Planon system to ensure timely and accurate completion.

Requirements:

• Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Background in electrical trade practices, including familiarity with materials, tools, and safe handling procedures. Possession of a Texas Electrical Apprentice License or equivalent is strongly preferred.
• Shift work required.
• 1-3 years: Working as a craft technician or tradesperson in an industrial or facilities maintenance environment.
• 1-3 years: Possess proficient knowledge of tasks, materials, processes, and tools related to commercial and industrial electrical systems.
• 1-3 years: Proficiency in using a work phone and computer for reporting and administrative tasks. Demonstrate the ability to utilize, create, and modify Microsoft Office documents and complete a daily timesheet.
• 1-3 years: Experience using work order and asset management systems such as Planon to track preventive maintenance, close out tickets, and manage resources.
• A valid/clear driver's license is required.
