SR. RESEARCH ENGINEER - RESEARCH ENGINEER - MECHANICS AND MATERIALS

Who We Are:

Join our Mechanics & Materials team performing advanced materials research solving our clients’ toughest technical problems across a broad range of industries. Current areas include environment assisted cracking/corrosion fatigue, aerospace alloys for aircraft lifing/sustainment, & hi-temp materials.

Objectives of this Role:

• Apply fundamental understanding of mechanics of materials to design and execute fatigue and fracture mechanics materials testing for assuring the integrity of critical components, structures, and infrastructure.
• Contribute to ongoing project-work under the supervision of project managers and senior staff.
• Manage tasks and projects to ensure technical objectives are achieved on schedule and within budgets.

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:

• Work with limited oversight through application of advanced and technically challenging approaches to solve complex client problems.
• Create 3D models and drawings for test specimens, testing hardware, and fixtures using Solidworks or similar.
• Utilize testing standards to define, design, and execute mechanical testing such as fracture toughness, fatigue, and fatigue crack growth rate.
• Prepare and present technical reports, presentations, and testing results to senior staff and external and internal customers.
• Develop business through conference attendance, committee memberships, and professional networking.
• Develop solutions and write proposals based on customer inquiries and funding opportunities.
• Independently manage projects from inception to completion.
• Experience utilizing digital image correlation (DIC) software for surface displacement and strain measurements.
• Develop experimental hardware and testing approaches for extreme environments including high-pressure, high-temperature, and aqueous.

Requirements:

• Requires a Masters or a PhD with a 3.20 GPA in Engineering Mechanics, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a similar engineering field
• 5 or more: Strong background in mechanics of materials and solid mechanics with a strong emphasis on fracture and fatigue
• Hands-on experience with mechanical testing in graduate school or industry including fatigue, fatigue crack growth, and fracture toughness testing is required
• Experience using servo-hydraulic and/or electro-mechanical load frames to perform materials testing is required in graduate school or industry
• Experience designing testing hardware and fixturing, utilizing data acquisition systems, and analyzing mechanical testing data in graduate school or industry
• Must be able to identify research problems and develop/implement innovative technical solutions within budget and schedule constraints
• Must possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate complex information to non-experts
• A valid/clear driver's license is required
